He has won several short story awards including the Neil Gunn, Ian St James and Macallan; Some Rain Must Fall (1998) won a Scottish Arts Council award as well as the Saltire First Book of the Year Award, 1999; Under the Skin, his first novel, was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel of the Year 2000, and has sold to 14 countries. Faber is also the 200I recipient of a London Arts Foundation Fellowship for short stories.
